Black holes and gravitational waves
Amri Wandel
Abstract

Both of these exotic phenomena, predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, were for many years thought of as mathematical curiosities, not actually existing in the real world. Even Einstein himself doubted the reality of these fantastic and hard-to-perceive manifestations of his theory. Black holes were discovered by astronomers about fifty years ago, gravitational waves five years ago, in September 2015 (Nobel Prize in Physics 2017), and the gigantic black hole at the centre of our Galaxy in 1995 (Nobel Prize in Physics 2020). We will learn what black holes really are, how they are linked to gravitational waves, and what enigmatic discoveries have been made in recent years concerning these two phenomena.
